They celebrated like they had just won the league championship, and with good reason. After losing 14 consecutive games, the New Carlisle Knights baseball team used a big inning en route to a 6-4 victory over the Wright Field Reds. With the win, the Knights watch their record go to 2-14 on the season.
“It was a good performance tonight against the Reds,” said Knights general manager Bob Alexander. “We all hit the ball well tonight, and showed a lot of improvement.” Ironically, the Knights brought in three of their former players to add to their roster. Jim Greear, Sam Horner and Jeff Fitch all played in their first game of the season, and contributed to the win. It looked like another rough night for the Knights, as the Reds opened the game on fire. A first-pitch double by Chris Barnes led off the game, and following a walk to Rex Ramey, it was a run scoring single by Jason Barrett giving the Reds a 1-0 lead. The very next batter, Andy Lowrey ripped a double to score two more runs, and before an out was even recorded, the Reds led 3-0. Knights starting pitcher Howard Wooten then settled down and retired the next three batters, but the host Knights were looking at a deficit before they came to the plate. They also threatened with two runners on and one out, but they could not score in the first. The second inning saw the Reds again put two runners on base with one out, but a base running error by the Reds stranded two runners. Another threat in the next inning saw Ramey and Tom Cokely on base with two outs, but a strong defensive play by the Knights infield left them on base without any damage. Then came the third, and the Knights came to life. Alexander opened the inning with a single, and moved up when Horner reached on an error. Dave Ridener then doubled in Alexander, and Steve Harsman reached on a single to score Horner and Ridener. Wooten then singled, and when he went to steal second, an errant throw allowed Harsman to score. Jim Clark then gave the Knights a 5-3 lead with a fielders’ choice ground out. Both teams scored in the fifth, as the Reds made it 5-4 on a run scoring single from Scott Murphy, but the Knights came right back to push their lead back to two runs as Wooten walked, and with two outs, Greear reached on an error, allowing Wooten to come all the way around the score. The Knights return to action tonight at 6:00 at Gastineau Field, and then play again on Sunday at 1 p.m.
