The City of New Carlisle Water and Sewer rates will be increasing due to the deterioration of the thirty miles of water info structure. "It is increasingly becoming expensive to maintain the City's water info structure, Mr. Howard Kitko, The City's Public Works Director in charge of the City Water Department, explained, " The new Water Plant is now seven years old and is needing additional maintenance to maintain the up-keep of the facility. Plus the water info structure throughout the City is deteriorating. We are currently losing an estimated 49% of the City's Municipal water supply due to underground water leaks. For example;" Mr. Kitko continued, "Citizens have probably noticed dug up sections of streets throughout the City of New Carlisle. Those are water main breaks. These water main breaks are going to continue and the cost to find these breaks are increasing. The Citizens of New Carlisle pay water and sewer to maintain the water info structure. The revenue collected is the only means the City uses to maintain the City's Municipal Water Supply. The water department does not receive revenue from city tax." The equipment necessary to find the underground leaks is currently being contracted out at cost of $10,000 to $15,000. The water and sewer rates are expected to increase in late spring or early summer.
