Venison Cabbage Rolls.  Deer Meat Loaf.  Deer Steaks.  Raccoon, Squirrel and Groundhog.

It was all on the menu at Medway Baptist Church’s 5th Free Wild Game Dinner on Saturday (January 30).

“I started coming here about six years ago,” said Miles Davis, organizer of the dinner.  “I never went to church before but my wife made me join.”  Then Davis met Melvin VanSickle, former pastor of the church.  VanSickle happened to mention that several Baptist churches “down south” have wild game dinners, and he thought Davis should organize one at Medway.

“I’m an organizer,” said Davis.  “That’s why they asked me to handle it.”

And handle it he did.  Nearly 400 visitors were expected to taste some of the delicacies available.

“Everything’s good,” said Bunny Rodgers, formerly of Medway.  “I haven’t tasted anything I don’t like.”

“The deer cabbage rolls are the best,” said Margaret Chatfield of Park Layne.

"We don't charge admission," said Davis.  "And we don't ask for donations, but we will take them."

The church has only failed to offer the dinner one year.  “That was three years ago when we had the blizzard,” said Davis.  “No one could go anywhere and we had to throw everything out.”

“We have a good little church here,” said Davis.  “We’ve got a good pastor – he really knows the Bible.  And we get kids involved to get them off the streets.”
