DAYTON – When senior Zach Rapp hit a game-tying three pointer in the closing seconds of regulation, the Tecumseh Arrows headed into overtime with all of the momentum. Unfortunately, the momentum didn’t carry over for the Arrows.
Sidney used a 13-5 extra period to capture the opening game of the Division One Sectionals at UD Arena, and knock the Arrows out of the post season with a 65-57 victory. “These kids never quit, and competed all the way to the end,” said Tecumseh coach Roger Culbertson. “They showed their true character tonight, and I am very proud of how they played.” Early in the game, the Arrows watched as Sidney jumped in front 10-4 before the Arrows closed the gap thanks to a pair of baskets from senior Karson Williams. After one period, Sidney led 12-8. It was 16-12 early in the second quarter, when the Arrows offense went cold. While they couldn’t get the ball to drop, it was Sidney taking advantage of it. A 9-0 run pushed the Yellow Jacket lead to 25-12 with 2:46 left in the half. Dustin Holmes finally broke the string with a layup, and when Rapp added another inside shot, the Arrows cut the Sidney lead to 25-16. As the first half came to a close, the Arrows stared at a 10-point deficit. “We were getting open looks in the first half, we just weren’t hitting shots,” Culbertson said. “The kids were playing well, we just couldn’t knock them down.” After cutting the Sidney lead to four points heading into the fourth, Mike McKee tried to keep them Arrows close. He hit a shot to open the period to cut the deficit to two, and after the Jackets ran off five straight points, McKee buried a three, making to 40-36 Sidney. Another three by Sidney gave them a four point lead with 4:32 left, but then, the Arrows finally took the lead. Rapp nailed a three to bring the Arrows to within one, and McKee buried two free throws, and Tecumseh led 44-43. From there, both teams had their chances. Sidney led 52-49 with 18.5 seconds left and was on the line shooing the bonus. After a miss, Rapp hit a three from the left wing with three seconds left, sending the game into overtime. In the overtime, Sidney took a 58-55 lead midway through the four minute extra period, but Holmes kept it close with a layup at the two minute mark. Those would be the final points that the Arrows would score, as Sidney ended the overtime with a 7-0 run to capture the win.  BOX  Sidney (65)- Foy 6 Heins 2, Lowe 10, Michael 12, Ocke 18, Yinger 17. Total 65.
