Being second best isn’t always a bad thing, except for when it comes to the expectations for the Northwestern golf team. In two of Evan Crew’s three years with the Warriors, the golfers placed second in the race for the CBC title.

The Northwestern senior is ready for that to change.

“It always came down to only a few strokes in those years,” Crew said. “We’re really motivated to accomplish that goal. As a team, we definitely want to compete for and win a Mad River Division championship.

“As an individual I feel I have a good chance to win Player of the Year in our division of the CBC, so I am going to work as hard as I can to accomplish that goal. I also want to earn All-County honors at the Clark County tournament at the Elks this year, and then advance as far as I can in the post- season (sectional and district) tournaments.”

For most people, those are pretty lofty goals. But for Crew, he has the resume to back them up.

In golf, Crew is a 3 time letter winner. His sophomore year he earned honorable mention Mad River division CBC. Last season as a junior, he was first team all-CBC Mad River Division. He was also a top ten finish in the Cristoff Memorial tournament at Reid.

“A big area of focus for me is to practice to become more consistent around the greens,” he said. “That’s where you have to score in golf, so I feel that’s the most important thing I need to work on. Also just work on staying patient on the course and not allowing a bad break here or there to affect me throughout the round.”

“I also want to keep becoming a better teammate and leader for the guys this season. As a senior, I know I have to step into that role even more this year than I have in the past so I am excited for that new challenge as the season comes.”

Not only is Crew a standout on the links, he also is a veteran leader for the Warriors baseball team. He is a two-time letter winner, twice named honorable mention Mad River division.

“My parents have definitely been a great influence in my passion for sports. At a very young age they signed me up to play many different sports from soccer, football basketball and baseball,” he said. “When I was very young playing these sports, I just fell in love and haven’t looked back. I am really blessed I’ve had to opportunity to play them as I was growing up.”

While a leader in both sports, he also enjoys both, not favoring one over the other.

“I can’t really say I have a favorite between golf and baseball, they are such different sports and offer many different challenges and I enjoy both of them immensely,” he said. “I am a very competitive person, so any opportunity I get to express that competitive spirit I immediately become attracted to it.”

“Throughout high school I’ve had many great experiences but it’s tough to pick one moment that feels most important. I have the most fun going to battle with great teammates and friends. We push each other to continually improve and I enjoy that the most when it comes to sports.”

“Another highlight of my high school career that I am proud of is battling through and coming back from three knee surgeries. It’s had a huge impact on my athletic career and looking back I feel being able to persevere through those injuries makes me believe that I can overcome any challenges in athletics and in life.”

Crew, who is the President of the senior class at Northwestern is also a member of student council, National Honor Society and Spanish Club President. While volunteering for Young Life and Junior Achievement, he also knows a chance to play the sports he loves at the next level could be there.

“I would love to keep playing sports in college, whichever sport it may be. If given the right opportunity,” he said. “I’d really be excited to pursue it in the future. But at a young age I’ve told myself that I won’t allow sports to keep me from pursuing the best collegiate educational opportunity I may have, so I’ll see how this year goes and will cross that bridge when I get there.”

Crew is looking at a future in biology or biochemistry with a pre-medicine emphasis and pursue a career as a doctor.
