Park Layne Elementary commemorated Dr. Seuss’ would-be 112th birthday and Read Across America Week with a special emphasis on reading. Kindergartners and first graders were encouraged to read an extra thirty minutes each day. Students meeting the challenge signed a “fish” and added it to the “fishbowl.” More than 200 students met the challenge!
Classroom doors were decorated with Dr. Seuss themed sayings and titles, and each day focused on a different Dr. Seuss book read by a guest reader. The week’s Dr. Seuss titles were One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, Horton Hears a Who!, The Foot Book, Oh, The Places You’ll Go!, and If I Ran the Zoo. Students participated in many activities related to these titles: making and wearing Horton masks, wearing mismatched socks and shoes, dressing for success, and bringing favorite stuffed animals to school.
