The very first “Veterans Day,” known as “Armistice Day,” was celebrated on Nov. 11, 1919 to commemorate the first anniversary of the end of World War I and to honor the war’s veterans. In 1954, Armistice Day became known as “Veterans Day” in order to honor the U.S. veterans of all wars, while still keeping the original intent of the holiday. Parades, public meetings, and a brief halt to business at 11:00 am marked the original holiday. The Tecumseh Local School District is continuing this tradition by offering many opportunities for local residents to join area students in celebrating Veterans Day and honoring United States veterans.

On Nov. 11, Tecumseh High School will hold the earliest Veterans Day commemoration with a flag raising ceremony in front of the high school at 8:00 a.m.; refreshments will follow this event. Tecumseh Middle School will hold their ceremony in the gym at 1:00 p.m. and Park Layne Elementary School will be holding their observance at 1:45 p.m.

On Nov. 12, Donnelsville Elementary School will celebrate Veterans Day with a program at 9:00 a.m. and New Carlisle Elementary will hold their Veterans Day program at 2:00 p.m.

Everyone is invited to join Tecumseh’s students in continuing the tradition of honoring United States veterans. For more information call your local school or go online to the School District’s website at http://www.tecumseh.k12.oh.us/.
