June is here and we are excited by all of the outdoor activities that are just ramping up. It is the perfect time to find a new family member at your local shelter to share those lazy, crazy days of summer with.

The Humane Society Serving Clark County will host their annual Adopt-A-Thon this coming Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4. The shelter located at 5201 Urbana Road just north of Springfield will open at Noon on Friday and not close until Midnight. On Saturday, adoption hours will be extended from 8 am until 5 pm for this once a year event.

Shelter Coordinator Krissi Hawke has changed the event up a bit this year by closing at Midnight on Friday and reopening on Saturday at 8 but she promises that the specials will be just as exciting as in years past.

Last year special prices were available on adoptable pets throughout the weekend including a pajama event that found a special home for a lot of dogs.

Hawke asks that potential adopters watch the Humane Society Serving Clark County Facebook page to learn more about the event and to see the updates on the price reductions and special events associated with this one time adoption marathon. Sharing the posts with friends on the page has often lead to a larger number of pets finding homes around the Miami Valley and beyond.

All of the pets that are adopted from The Humane Society have been vet checked and have been spayed or neutered. Even if you are not in the market for a new dog or cat, you can support the programs at the Humane Society by making a donation to help with the cost of the spay and neuter clinic. This program helps to eliminate the number of homeless animals in our community.

Just a note to let everyone know that we are in the middle of kitten season and the shelter needs responsible foster families to help with the number of kittens waiting to be adopted.

The shelter is also in need of volunteers to help with the various adoption projects which includes a weekly visit to the Bechtle Avenue PetSmart where families can come and adopt a dog on Saturdays. The volunteers help with the adoption process by talking to prospective owners and by taking the dogs for a walk outside during the event.

At the shelter, you can help by doing laundry, feeding, watering and other tasks. There are also opportunities to spend quality time with the adoptable pets.
