As the winds of March pick up to usher in spring, the New Carlisle Public Library is offering a number of family-friendly programs to ease those last few days of winter. On March 1, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Julia Cook is offering a program on how essential oils can be used to support healthy brain function in children. Topics include depression, anxiety, disruptive behavior, attention, and stress. Cook will suggest practices for children and recommendations on essential oils, oil blends, and application methods.
With spring right around the corner, on Saturday March 5, Linda Nowakowski will offer a workshop for the New Carlisle Community Garden. The City of New Carlisle has designated an area next to the old Madison School on Madison Street for use by community members for a community garden. Plots are available for residents in the area to rent for the season to plant a garden for their own use. The goal is for residents to grow their own produce as well as to encourage neighborhood improvement, and develop a sense of community and connection to the environment. The session runs from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
On Wednesday, March 9, the Diabetes Support Group meets from 4:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m. to share recipes and discuss how to live well with diabetes.
If you are interested in local history, the New Carlisle Historical Society and the Medway Historical Society are sponsoring a program on March 11, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the electric railroad and Bethel Township. The railway established in 1904 provided passenger transportation between Springfield and Troy.
On Saturday March 12, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., local artist Robyn Terry is offering a mixed media class on Wild Flowers. Participants will develop their own work of art based on the theme. Mixed media uses a variety of techniques and materials to produce a finished work of art. This session is full; however, if interested, call the library at 845-3601 to enroll in the next class. Pre-registration is required and the cost is $20 to cover materials.
On March 15, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the Mystery Book Club meets to discuss C.J. Box’s novel Badland. The story takes place in Grimstad, North Dakota, a place people can’t wait to leave. However, all of that changes when it became the oil capital of North Dakota. With oil came money, drugs, and drug dealers. The deputy sheriff Cassie Dewell must restore law and order. But, she is in over her head. However, she finds help from Kyle Westergaard, who knows more than he is telling.
In addition, on March 15, a coloring meditation session is offered from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for interested participants.
On March 16, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Reader’s Choice Group meets to discuss Orphan Train by Christina Kline. The Dayton-Montgomery County Library selected this novel as the 2016 Big Read choice. The Big Read is a national program that encourages reading in community-wide programs. The Orphan Train is a story of friendship and second chances. Penobscot Indian Molly Ayer, who is approaching adulthood, accepts a service position helping an elderly woman clean out her home. As she helps Vivian sort through her possessions and memories, Molly and Vivian develop a friendship based on the shared loss of their parents. As the two discover the secrets from their pasts, they discover answers that free them both.
On March 19, Tom Hughes will be offering a Ham Radio Training Class. The class prepares participants for the Technician License. The license requires passing one examination with 35 questions on radio theory, regulations and operating practices.
Throughout March AARP Tax Help is available every Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration is required. Only a few time slots remain. If you need assistance, call the library at 845-3601 or register at the circulation desk.
Ongoing programs at the library include a Euchre Club that meets every second and fourth Friday of the month from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to play cards and develop new friendships.
The Writers’ Group meets every week on Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
In addition, The Quilters’ Club meets every second and fourth Tuesday from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
