Bethel scored early in the contest, and added an insurance goal midway through the second half, en route to a 2-0 victory over Franklin Monroe last week in a Cross County Conference girls’ soccer game. In the boys’ game that same evening, the Bees fell short of knocking off one of the league favorites from FM 2-1.

In the girls game over in Darke County, the Bees controlled the majority of the game in the Jets end of the field, challenging the Franklin Monroe keeper most of the game.

“We came off of a couple of losses, so the main thing is that we wanted to just compose tonight,” said Bethel coach Amanda Crase. “We wanted to play possession and passing and we did that well tonight.”

“I wish we would have capitalized on a couple more of the passes that were put through, but the girls played well and we will take the win tonight.”

The Bees challenged in the opening minutes of the game, when Erica Turner tried to get the games’ first run off a corner kick, but fell short.

One minute later, the Bees capitalized on a good shot in the box, as Helen Kahler finished off a scramble around the net, putting the visiting Bees in front 1-0 at the 32:20 mark of the first half.

“Helen was in the right spot at the right time, and we have been working at practice this week about the outside mids making those runs, crashing the goal and that is what she did.”

From there, Bethel continues to spray shots at the Jets keeper, only to fall short and send the game to the half with the Bees up 1-0.

Bethel controlled the action in the opening three minutes of the second half before Franklin Monroe got their first shot of the second half at the 26:22 mark, but the Bees keeper kept the shutout alive.

Turner added a second goal for the Bees at the 15:24 mark of the game, when she ripped a shot into the upper right of the net, pushing the Bees lead out to 2-0.

“She’s just a great finisher, and when you least expect it, she rips one off,” Crase said.

Bethel goes to 7-3 overall on the season.

*Bethel boys- The Bees suffered only their second loss of the season last week, losing to the Jets 2-0.

“We played a hard fought physical game tonight,” Bethel coach Bob Hamlin said. “I thought we had some good opportunities early in the match, but then Franklin Monroe started controlling more and more of the midfield, making it harder for us to pass.”

FM scored at the 12:00 mark to give them a 1-0 lead against the Bees.

“We had a breakdown at midfield, which allowed a one-touch give and go for that goal,” Hamlin said. “We had a few more chances and missed a PK before halftime that could have helped us mentally.”

Both teams are back in action tomorrow night against Miami East in a league contest. The boys’ play at Miami East, while the girls’ play at home.
