Tecumseh Football

After a rough start to the season, the Tecumseh Arrows have won their last three consecutive games, as they traveled to Urbana last Friday, and enjoyed a 28-3 victory over the Hillclimbers. The Arrows now head into conference play this week, hosting 4-1 Kenton Ridge on Friday.

The Arrows opened with a successful drive to start the game against the Climbers. Brandon Morgan and Blake Nickell broke off first downs with runs of 11 and 24 yards respectfully, putting the Arrows deep in Urbana territory early in the game.

Staring at a fourth down, Morgan picked up a huge first down to keep the drive alive inside the 15, where three plays later, Jayden McFarland hit Nickell on a nine-yard strike, giving the Arrows a quick 7-0 lead only 8:33 into the game.

After the Arrows defense forced a punt, their offense went back to work. On another fourth-down play, the Arrows gained a first down to the Urbana 3, where they continued their drive. Nickell converted another fourth down inside the 20, where Garrett McCormick broke loose for a 16 yard touchdown run with 1:08 left in the first quarter, pushing the Arrows lead to 14-0.

Urbana came back with a huge pass play into Tecumseh territory, but their drive stalled at the six yard line. The Climbers converted on a 22 yard field goal with 8:30 left in the half, closing the gap to 14-3.

It didn’t take the Arrows long to answer, in fact, it took all of one play.

Following the kickoff, Nickell broke away from the Climbers defense and sprinted down the left sideline 79 yards for a touchdown, to give Tecumseh a 21-3 lead, and end the short burst of momentum Urbana had from their field goal.

As the half was winding down, the Arrows nearly capitalized on another big play. McFarland hit Morgan on a long pass play down to the Urbana ten yard line with 11.7 seconds left in the half. As time expired, and the field goal unit standing by, the Arrows nearly scored on a touchdown but he was ruled out of bounds and the clock expired, not allowing the Arrows to get their kicking unit out, and the Arrows held a 21-3 lead at the half.

Tecumseh came back late in the third period and padded their lead. Starting at the Urbana 46, the Arrows drove down field keeping the ball on the ground, and with 53.3 seconds left, Nickell scored from seven yards out, giving the Arrows their final margin of victory.

The Tecumseh defense continued to shine in the second half, as interceptions by Rylan Magsaysay and Brody Martin kept the Climbers out of the end zone.

The Arrows return to action on Friday night at Spitzer Stadium, 7:30 for their Homecoming game.

*Tecumseh coach Kent Massie missed the game on Friday night due to a medical leave. His return date is unknown.
