The finalization of the Tecumseh Local School District budget topped the agenda when the Tecumseh Board of Education (BOE) met at the BOE office in a brief, regular session on Jan. 25, 2016 at 5:30 p.m.

Tecumseh Local Schools BOE President, Kurt Lewis, led attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance and opened the meeting to new business.

Tecumseh Local School District Treasurer, Debra Schock, led discussion about the district’s financial reports and the 2017 budget proposal initially brought before the BOE at the budget hearing on Jan. 12, 2016. A question was raised regarding the large number of checks issued by the district which remain unclaimed by their payees. The checks come to a total of $21,388.99. Schock replied that the district is required to hold unclaimed checks for a period of five years before disposing of them. However, according to Schock the amount owed to payees can be claimed at any time with proper identification. The district is continuing its attempts to reach payees of the unclaimed checks.

After further discussion, the BOE voted to accept the financial reports and proposed budget for 2017.

In other financial matters, the BOE voted to advance funds in order to pay the district’s negative fund balances totaling $390,584.42. The money will come out of the district’s General Fund, which has an unencumbered balance of $2, 729,824.62. The money will eventually be refunded back into the General Fund upon receipt of funds from the state.

The BOE also voted to accept donations made each month on behalf of the Tecumseh Local School District in the matter which the donations are presented.

In other business, the BOE approved a request to grant gymnastics the status of “club sport” at Tecumseh High School. Jasmine Musick was accepted to serve as a volunteer advisor for the club. The new gymnastics club sport is established at no additional cost to the district.

Upon the meeting’s adjournment, the BOE attended the All-County Board Dinner at the Springfield-Clark CTC in Springfield, Ohio.

The next regular Tecumseh BOE meeting is scheduled for Feb. 23, 2016 at 7:00 and will take place in Tecumseh High School’s the Arrow Conference Room. The public is encouraged to attend all BOE meetings. Approved minutes of past Tecumseh BOE meetings can be found online at http://www.tecumseh.k12.oh.us/.
